Dr. Jane McCusker will present the results of the Direct-sc project, which aims to support the detection and management of depression in primary care. More than 10% of cancer patients suffer from a major depressive disorder, that’s double the rate found in the general population. However, in the context of cancer care, many patients report that their psychological needs are not adequately addressed. This is why cancer care recommendations issued in Canada, the United States and Europe, encourage health care professionals to screen cancer patients for depression. Results from the first phase show that self-care of depression for primary care patients 40 years and over with chronic disease is feasible. A randomized controlled trial is planned to assess the effectiveness of the supported versus unsupported intervention (self-care tools with or without the coach calls) as evaluated in terms of the severity of depressive symptoms at six month follow-up.
